Carat Weight
As with all gemstones, the weight of a diamond is expressed in 'carats'. One carat actually weighs one fifth of a gram. Each carat is divided into 100 points, and is written with a decimal. For example, a diamond weighing one carat is written as weighing 1.00ct. A half carat diamond then weighs .50ct.
Most people comprehend the size of a diamond visually, not as a weight. Unfortunately this can be somewhat misleading to the consumer. The visual size plays hand-in-hand with the Cut factor (another of the 4 C's). An IDEAL cut round diamond weighing 1.00ct should have a visual diameter of 6.6mm. An IDEAL cut .50ct round diamond should measure 5.2mm.
When purchasing a diamond, you can trust the gemologists at Wharram's Jewellery to represent the weight and size of your diamond accurately.
